INNOVATION IN A TIME OF UNCERTAINTY

Business is facing more uncertainty today than any time in memory and many businesses have opted for a "Steady as She Goes" philosophy during this period. A word about "Steady as She Goes" - it is the start of a slippery slide downward. There is no "steady" in business - You are UP or you are OUT, so if you'd like to be UP then it is time to get your innovative juices flowing.

In a previous blog we talked about "Eating the Competition" - buy away the phone numbers and client lists of your weaker competitors. It will be a cheap buy and you will reduce the size of your market's supply while increasing your market share with little extra work. If done right, this move pays for itself very quickly.

That is not the innovaiton we're talking about today - It's Netflix vs Blockbuster. It's the good idea - implemented. You've had many good ideas, but did you write them down and take the time to "teamwork them" and see if they could be implemented. The next time that idea enters your head - write it down - that may mean keeping a pad and pencil on the nightstand. Comedians MUST do this. You CAN do this.

Read inspirational stuff instead of motivational, organizational, proceedural stuff. There is a ton of that stuff, and very little good stuff about innovation. Boulder has the highest level of “well-being” among 185 metro areas nationwide, and Colorado ranks No. 7 among states, a new report says. The “Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index,” released Monday, seeks to measure the daily state of health and well-being in cities and states, based on interviews by the Gallup polling organization assessing emotional and physical health, behavior, work environment and access to health care, among other factors.

Will 2010 Be a Recovery Year or the Year of the Temps

For some, 2009 was not a decline year, but for many it was. With a stock market showing recovery and the business news reflecting increased productivity without companies desiring to permanently increase staffing, who will the winner be? One winner will be the Temporary Personnel Services. If you are thinking about buying a business this year, you might be looking for a small well positioned Temporary Staffing Agency. There are franchises in this category as well as independents. Finding the right one will require a long search or the use of a business buying agent. Staffing has many categories including medical, home care, office, labor and more. Check in with a trusted business broker to see what's available. Some brokers have "Pocket Listings" that are closely held companies that "could be in play" but are not listed. Temporary employment won't only be good for 2010. This category has always produced solid results from well managed companies.

Denver among top U.S. cities for 2009 home-value gain

Metro Denver had the third-largest gain in home values among cities nationwide in 2009 through November, with a $10.7 billion increase, according to Zillow Real Estate Market Reports. Only Boston ($23.3 billion) and Providence, R.I. ($12.4 billion) had greater gains in home value.

Newsletter Etiquette?

Are you receiving more newsletters (with our without offers) than you have time to read? Sometimes, it seems to me that there are quite a few newsletter pests, and sometimes it is really unfortunate because occasionally they have interesting stuff to say.

Seeing their banner two and three times a week wears me down and hitting the delete button seems like a real good idea. I know some of these people and unsubscribing creates issues I'd rather not deal with, so I just keep hitting the "X".

So, what is the proper newsletter etiquette? How many is too many? I'd like your comments before I start sending out the Colorado Business Listings Newsletter. I'm thinking about one a month.

How do your feel about Surveys? I will respond to a survey only if they will send me back the results, and only if it's about an interest of mine. Do you respond to them? Please let me know your opinion. Your input with help me with my output.

Forbes: Colorado is America's 4th-best state for business

Colorado ranks No. 4 on Forbes.com's latest ranking of the best states for business, up two notches from the 2008 list.

The rankings are based on six criteria: costs, labor supply, regulatory environment, current economic climate, growth prospects and quality of life. Business costs -- including labor, energy and taxes -- were weighted the most heavily.

10 Colorado tech companies on fastest-growing list

Ten Colorado companies have been named to Deloitte’s 2009 “Technology Fast 500” ranking of the fastest-growing tech firms.

Released Tuesday, the list includes businesses in such fields as media, telecommunications, life sciences and clean technology.
The top Colorado business on the list, at No. 30, is Arca BioPharma Inc., a Broomfield biotechnology company that this year shifted its business strategies, laid off half its workforce and replaced its CEO.

SBA offers help to women business owners

Women small businesses owners will be able to use a new online training course to learn how to identify and take advantage of federal contracting opportunities.
The course being offered by the Small Business Administration is part of a government-wide initiative to promote opportunities for women-owned businesses in the area of government contracting.
SBA noted in a news release that it is committed to ensuring that women-owned businesses receive at least 5 percent of federal contracts.

AT&T says Denver capacity boost should help with smartphone woes
